Sakemaking takes root beyond Japan, from India to Singapore

Singapore's Orchid Sake Brewery is one of the small but emerging number of sake breweries in Asia.

In tropical Singapore, a city-state with no rice paddies and no seasons, Orchid Sake Brewery is showing that sake production can take place in a highly urbanized environment.

Reuben Oh, 31opened the brewery on a scrappy budget in February 2024 with no formal brewing background of his own. The day-to-day production is led by head brewer Yumika Yamamoto, who previously worked at a few sake breweries in Japan.
